Grandma-style hot chocolate
Today’s product is a true classic in Mexico: Nestlé ABUELITA.

This is not a Kirkland item, but Costco carries it and it is usually easy to spot. The pack includes two 630g boxes (1.26 kg total), so it feels heavy and substantial in your hands.

As many people already know, this is a high-calorie, very sweet hot chocolate product. As a rough guide, 1/4 tablet (about one cup) is around 100–120 kcal, and the total calories will vary depending on whether you prepare it with milk, water, or plant-based milk.

*Opening the box*

Even before opening it, I could already smell a light cinnamon-and-cocoa aroma. Once opened, the fragrance becomes stronger and very inviting.

Inside, the tablets are individually wrapped. I found 7 tablets (90g each) per box.

It looks like a solid chocolate disk, but when I cut it, the inside showed a slightly grainy layer—almost as if the sugar is very present in the structure (which matches the sweet taste).

Practical note: if you touch it directly with your hands, body heat starts to soften it and it gets sticky. It was easier for me to cut it with a knife. For one serving, I used the usual 1/4 tablet and chopped it into smaller pieces.

*I made it*

This time I prepared it with warm milk. Ideally you would use a whisk or traditional frothing tool, but I did not have one, so I stirred it patiently with a spoon.

As it dissolves, you get a wonderful cinnamon-cocoa aroma. I finished it with whipped cream on top for a richer, more indulgent cup.

It would also be great melted into hot coffee for a café mocha-style drink. Soy milk or almond milk should work nicely too. There are many fun ways to prepare it.

*Taste test*

It is very sweet, but also comforting and gentle in flavor. It has that familiar, home-style taste that makes it feel nostalgic and cozy.

I actually wish I had tried it on a colder day—it really feels like a drink made for cooler weather.

*How is the value?*

ABUELITA is sold in many formats and stores, but at Costco this 630g × 2 pack for 295.64 MXN is a strong value.

From what I remember, a single box can cost 160+ MXN at some supermarkets. If you already shop at Costco and do not mind the larger quantity, this pack is a very good buy.

Quick cost breakdown (approx.)
・Per 630g box: 💲147.82 MXN
・Per 90g tablet: 💲21.12 MXN
・Per cup (1/4 tablet): 💲5.28 MXN (before milk/water and toppings)

Bottom line: A classic Mexican hot chocolate with a rich cinnamon-cocoa aroma and a comforting taste. In this Costco pack, it offers excellent value for fans of traditional sweet hot chocolate.
